Gymnast Spotlight

Lucy Meola:
The Reluctant Dancer Shines

Each month GKC will amplify a gymnast’s floor routine highlights and celebrate their artistic accomplishments on floor. This gymnast is someone that is unique in their abilities to embody what it means to truly shine as a performer, athlete and competitor.

“Working on my floor routines with Soomi has been a key factor in helping me gain confidence to perform and compete. She always encourages me to expand my comfort zone and makes sure that I know my routines really well. When I get a floor routine with Soomi I always know that I have something unique and special that nobody else has.” - Lucy Meola

I have worked with Lucy on floor since 2015. Anyone can recognize Lucy’s outstanding talents as a dancer and athlete. As a young gymnast, she was not able to see this in herself, but over the past 5 years it’s clear that she is a stellar floor performer. Her ability to be present, express herself coupled with her sharp intelligence and extraordinary innate athletic attributes makes her a force to be reckoned with. She is just now coming into her own knowledge of her gifts and is a sheer joy to work with as a choreographer. Lucy is a student in our Creative Dance Workshop For Gymnasts and her talents are now also revealing that she is a creative and gifted choreographer in her own right. It is my pleasure to share her incredible work and story (from shy young gymnast to a confident strong powerhouse) with the world. - Soomi Kim

A note from Soomi…

I hope you enjoy reading all the great content in our 2nd GKC Blog post! My vision is to expand our operation and create a new model for a Gymnastics Blog that will help inform and invite different voices to the table to help normalize some topics that may have a “taboo” stigma, such as the growing and changing female athletic body. Next month we will begin a new series about bodies. Please take a moment to read about the GKC Blog and Theatre fundraiser below! Thank you all for visiting and enjoy!

Performance Project and GKC Fundraiser

We are currently conducting a fundraiser for two intersecting and related projects:

  1. Body Through Which the Dream Flows: A performance project that will be part play, part dance concert and will feature young female gymnasts.

  2. Our budding GymKim Choreo Blog

"Body Through Which the Dream Flows" is a performance project that will be part play, part dance concert and will feature young female gymnasts. GKC offers Floor Choreography, Creative Dance Workshops For Gymnasts and Floor Choreography Clinics for Coaches and just published its first Blog post in November.

The funds will go to the development of the performance project as well as the labor associated with our GKC team and contributors to make this blog as comprehensive and wide reaching as possible.

These projects will intersect, as the research, labor and material obtained for the blog will go into the script making for the theatre performance (hopefully to be hitting the stage in 2021!) GKC is a burgeoning new business, and "Body Through Which the Dream Flows" has been in development for the past 2 years!

In relationship to the GKC Blog, our goal is to create a way to shore up and build our resources monthly. I look forward to deepening the conversations surrounding topics related to gymnasts & coaches, including physical and emotional wellness, body awareness through organizing think tanks, round table discussions and surveys in the following months. We have a series spotlighting selected gymnasts, honoring High School Seniors as well as a monthly column with health coach Shay Grogan. I believe we are in a pivotal time where work, creativity, sports, community outreach, and activism can and should converge.

Our goal is to raise $4,000 by December 31st and so far we’re at $1,550!The fundraiser is through Facebook and will run until December 31st.

This fundraiser has ended. Thank you for your support!
