Eric Pung
Co-Choreographer for 2021-2029 USA Gymnastics Women’s Development Program Compulsory Routines
Zoom interview! Top: Soomi Kim, Eric Pung., Bottom: Riley Dunbar
We’re posting this on June 4th, 2021, the day the new compulsories are officially launched!!
Have you ever wondered who choreographs the compulsory routines and what that process looks like? It was so thrilling for Riley and I to be able to talk to Eric Pung and to pick his brain about the skills, approaches in dance technique, the need to emphasize variety in movement, the music selection and so much more. I personally love geeking out on talking about these things. We could’ve chatted for hours. It’s a highly informative talk! Enjoy our conversation!
BIO: Eric Pung (he/they) is one of the co-choreographers (Floor and Beam) for the 2021-2029 USA Gymnastics Women's Development Program Compulsory cycle and has been involved in the sport of gymnastics as an athlete, coach, and women's artistic judge for over 25 years. Eric additionally serves on multiple committees for both USA Gymnastics as well as NAWGJ, has guest coached at clinics and camps, and has been a clinician at state, regional, and national congresses and symposia. Eric has also worked professionally as an acrobat, dancer, and choreographer across the United States; notable theatrical credits include A Chorus Line, La Cage Aux Folles, and West Side Story. In addition to his gymnastics and dance experience, Eric is also a visual artist, art historian, and educator focusing on contemporary performance art and material culture. Eric currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
A note from Soomi…
This year has been exceptionally challenging so everyone deserves a medal for finding your own way through it. There was no predicting what would come of this season and it demonstrated to be a collective effort of determination and perseverance; so bravo athletes, coaches and parents! We’re also breathing life into a new chapter of gymnastics, with a new cycle compulsories, new routines and the anticipation of the Olympics! Not to mention, our new website designed by our awesome Art Director, Riley Dunbar (thanks Riley!)
